Abaddon<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n

<\/a>The term:<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

Abaddon is a Hebrew term, thus is constrained to the Old Testament, except for one occasion when the Hebrew term is referenced in the New Testament.\u00a0 <\/span>It appears seven times in the bible.\u00a0 <\/span>Since it is used so sparingly, this section will be able to examine each use of the term.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abaddon is translated “destruction” throughout the NIV and KJV, except for the Revelation passage, where Abaddon is rendered in its native Hebrew, for obvious reasons we’ll examine in this section.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The texts:<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Job 26:6 (NIV) 6<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Death (Heb Sheol) is naked before God;
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Destruction (Heb Abaddon) lies uncovered.

<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Job 28:22 (NIV) 22<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Destruction (Abaddon) and Death (Sheol) say,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0‘Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.’

<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Job 31:12 (NIV) 12<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0It is a fire that burns to Destruction (Abaddon);
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0it would have uprooted my harvest.

o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Psalms 88:11 (NIV) 11<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Is your love declared in the grave (qibrah \u2013 a non-proper name), your faithfulness in Destruction (Abaddon)?

<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Prov 15:11 (NIV)11<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Death (sheol) and Destruction (Abaddon) lie open before the LORD– how much more the hearts of men!

<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Prov 27:20 (NIV) 20<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Death (Sheol) and Destruction (Abbadon) are never satisfied, and neither are the eyes of man.

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Rev 9:11 (NIV) 11<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span>

<\/a>Conclusions:<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n
Abaddon is closely related to Sheol <\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>This conclusion is based on the parallel use of Abaddon along with Sheol in poetic texts.<\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Hebrew poetic verse is based on parallelism rather than rhythm or rhyme.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>There are five poetic books in the Old Testament:\u00a0 <\/span>Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Abbadon is referenced, interestingly, in three of the five, and in only one non-poetic book where it is rendered as a proper name of a demon.<\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>To be paralleled in Hebrew poetry, an item is noted to be related and closely knit in nature to that which it is paralleled.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Abaddon, being paralleled with Sheol, indicates that the two are closely related in nature or use.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>The texts using parallelism between the two:<\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Psalms 88:11 (NIV) 11<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Is your love declared in the grave (qibrah \u2013 a non-proper name), your faithfulness in Destruction (Abaddon)?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Here, an indirect parallel, it is with “the grave” although Sheol is not given its proper name.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Prov 15:11 (NIV)11<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Death (sheol) and Destruction (Abaddon) lie open before the LORD– how much more the hearts of men!<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Here, Abaddon is very properly paralleled with Sheol<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Again a direct parallel<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Of a total of six poetic texts using the term Abaddon, four of them parallel it with Sheol.<\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Thus, Abaddon is closely related to Sheol<\/span><\/p>\n

Abaddon denotes negativity<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Each text reflects Abaddon in a negative light.<\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>It is never used in a good or positive light<\/span><\/p>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Being associated with Sheol, which is compartmentalized into good and negative sections, it thus appears that Abaddon is only affiliated with the negative element of Sheol.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abaddon is the name of the unrighteous side of Sheol<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Being a proper name, paralleled with Sheol, and having a negative connotation leave the final deduction that Abaddon is the Hebrew name for the unrighteous compartment of Sheol\/Hades.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abaddon is the same as Appolyon<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n

Rev 9:11 (NIV) 11<\/sup>\u00a0They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n

o<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>This text refers to the demonic “locust” invasion of Revelation 9.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>“They” in the text, are the demon hordes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Thus, the name of the demon who led them was “Abaddon” in Hebrew and “Appolyon” in Greek.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>While Abaddon and Appolyon are noted as proper names of a demon, it should not be misunderstood that this was merely a name.\u00a0 <\/span>The name had meaning in that this demon was named after the unrighteous side of Sheol.\u00a0 <\/span>And, his Greek name being Appolyon indicates that the Greek term for Abaddon would also be the same translated term: Appolyon.<\/span><\/p>\n
