{"id":27,"date":"2008-08-21T19:09:41","date_gmt":"2008-08-21T19:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/returningking.com\/?p=27"},"modified":"2008-08-21T19:09:41","modified_gmt":"2008-08-21T19:09:41","slug":"spiritual-realms-the-abyss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/returningking.com\/?p=27","title":{"rendered":"Spiritual Realms (The Abyss)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 10 of 20 in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/returningking.com\/?series=spiritual-realms\" class=\"series-212\" title=\"Spiritual Realms\">Spiritual Realms<\/a><\/div><h1 style=\"margin: 24pt 0in 0pt;\"><a name=\"_Toc205266690\"><span style=\"font-size: large; font-family: Cambria;\">The Abyss<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 4pt 0in 0pt;\"><a name=\"_Toc205266691\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc205201000\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: _Toc205266691;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: large; font-family: Calibri;\">The Term<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;Abyss&#8221; is a Greek term occurring nine times in the New Testament.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The NIV derives it as &#8220;Abyss&#8221; from the Greek <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">abyssos <\/em>(pronounced &#8220;ab&#8217;-us-os&#8221;) while the KJV uses &#8220;bottomless pit&#8221; seven times and &#8220;the deep&#8221; in Luke and Romans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Abyssos<\/em> is derived from two Greek terms: <!--more--><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The first syllable, and the first term is Greek <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">a<\/em>, (pronounced &#8220;alpha&#8221; [as in &#8220;alphabet,&#8221; which it is the first letter in the Greek] when spoken alone, or &#8220;a&#8221; when prefixed to another term) which is a negative addition, when used as a prefix.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, a Greek term with &#8220;a&#8221; as a prefix would be stating that there was an absence of what follows. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The second term is Greek <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">buthos,<\/em> which means &#8220;depth&#8221; and is commonly attributed to the sea, but can also mean anything of great depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Thus to put the terms together the meaning is arrived at:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;without depth&#8221; or &#8220;bottomless&#8221; as KJV translates it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 4pt 0in 0pt;\"><a name=\"_Toc205266692\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc205201001\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: _Toc205266692;\"><span style=\"font-size: large; font-family: Calibri;\"><em>The Texts<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Luke 8:30-31 (NIV) <sup>30<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus asked him, &#8220;What is your name?&#8221;<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Legion,&#8221; he replied, because many demons had gone into him. <sup>31<\/sup>\u00a0And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Romans 10:6-7 (NIV) <sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0But the righteousness that is by faith says: &#8220;Do not say in your heart, &#8216;Who will ascend into heaven?&#8217; &#8221; (that is, to bring Christ down) <sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;or &#8216;Who will descend into the deep?&#8217; &#8221; (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Rev 9:1-2 (NIV) <sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. <sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Rev 9:11 (NIV) <sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Rev 11:7 (NIV)\u00a0<sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Rev 17:8 (NIV) <sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Rev 20:1-3 (NIV)\u00a0<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. <sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. <sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h5 style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">Deductions<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The direction is always downward \u2013 never upward.<\/span>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"circle\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Rev 17 says the beast &#8220;will come up out of the Abyss.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Rev 11 states the beast \u201d that comes up from the Abyss.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Rev 9 notes, &#8221; The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since smoke rises, one also assumes in this text the abyss to be underground.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Abyss is associated with spiritual beings \u2013 not human beings.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>(There are two possible exceptions to this rule we will get to momentarily)<\/span>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"circle\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In Rev 20, Satan is cast there for a thousand years<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In Rev 17 and 11 the Beast is cast there (one of the possible exceptions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In Luke 8 demons begged Jesus not to send them there<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Abyss is associated with evil, not righteousness<\/span>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"circle\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Luke 8 &#8211; demons who were afflicting a man pleaded not to go there<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In Rev 11 &amp; 17, Antichrist is sent there<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In Rev 20 Satan is cast into the Abyss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Abyss is a temporary place \u2013 not a permanent one.<\/span>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"circle\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Rev 20 notes that Satan is released from the Abyss after one thousand years<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Rev 11 and 17 note the Antichrist rising from the Abyss<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; tab-stops: list 1.0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Rev 9 notes the releasing of millions of beings from the Abyss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 4pt 0in 0pt;\"><a name=\"_Toc205266693\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc205201002\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: _Toc205266693;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: large; font-family: Calibri;\">General Conclusion<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The abyss is a temporary holding place for demons who have committed certain acts deemed punishable by God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">NOTE:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some see the Abyss as another unrighteous compartment <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">within<\/em> Sheol\/Hades, or perhaps a compartment within Abaddon itself. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Biblical inferences which suggest this are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 0pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo2; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">It is in a downward place<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo2; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Smoke rises from it in Rev 9 (Abaddon would contain smoke)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 15pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo2; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In Rev. 9, the &#8220;king&#8221; of the Abyss was named &#8220;Abbadon&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The naming of the king of the Abyss &#8220;Abaddon&#8221; is likely a good clue that the Abyss is part of, or associated with the location of Abbadon in Hades.<br style=\"mso-special-character: line-break;\" \/><br style=\"mso-special-character: line-break;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><em>Possible exceptions to &#8220;abyss&#8221; being used only of demonic beings<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Antichrist<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In Rev 11 and 17 the Antichrist is noted to be sent to the Abyss upon his death.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is then later resurrected and comes out of the Abyss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Many (including the author) understand Antichrist to be a creature of both human and demonic natures, or a half-man and half-angelic unholy creature, being the offspring of Satan himself with a human host in an attempt to counterfeit the incarnation of Christ with his own virgin born son.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>While the details of this position go beyond the scope of this study, it demonstrates why Antichrist would be sent to the Abyss: because he is demonic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Others who do not subscribe to the &#8220;son of Satan&#8221; position of Antichrist still overwhelmingly adhere to his demonic nature- by some other surely not less strange set of unspecified circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">By most theological positions, Antichrist is demonic in nature, thus is a candidate for the Abyss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><em><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Romans 10<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Romans 10:6-7 (NIV) <sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0But the righteousness that is by faith says: &#8220;Do not say in your heart, &#8216;Who will ascend into heaven?&#8217; &#8221; (that is, to bring Christ down) <sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;or &#8216;Who will descend into the deep?&#8217; &#8221; (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h6><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #243f60;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>A False Notion:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">It may appear that Romans 10 is indicating that Christ himself also went to the Abyss upon his crucifixion.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Paul does use the term <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">abyssos<\/em>, which is translated &#8220;the deep&#8221; in the NIV to hopefully avoid such misunderstandings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">This position would not take into account I Peter 3 &amp; 4 nor Ephesians 4 which was studied earlier in this work.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These texts depict Christ doing two things that simply cannot be true of the abyss:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">He preaches to the spirits there, which I Peter 4 indicates an acceptance of the gospel message from some of the constituents there.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are none in the Abyss by any other Biblical text whom could receive such preaching.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, I Peter cannot be speaking of the Abyss, but of Hades, as this &#8220;prison.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">He also brings &#8220;captives in his train&#8221; in Ephesians from there.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since every scriptural text indicates the Abyss as a place for spiritual beings, those captives in this view would be understood to be demonic, which makes no sense theologically.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #243f60;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The True Position<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In order to understand Romans 10:6-7 one must study harder than a surface scan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">First, it must be noted once again that <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">abyssos<\/em> is a combination of two words, the second of which is literally &#8220;depth&#8221; and is frequently used to refer to the sea.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Putting <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">a<\/em> in front of it makes a &#8220;depthless&#8221; sea if using that understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Secondly, it must be noted that Paul is quoting an Old Testament text in Romans 10:6-7.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In particular, he quotes Deuteronomy 30:12-13.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The full sentiment of Deut 30:12-13 is shown here:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: x-small; <sup>13 <\/sup>Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, &#8220;Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?&#8221; <sup>14 <\/sup>No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. <\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Paul&#8217;s readers, knowing he is quoting Deuteronomy, would have had no trouble understanding what he meant by <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">abyssos<\/em> here since what he quotes specifically notes &#8220;who will cross the sea.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, abyssos, in Romans 10 refers to the alternative usage of the term: <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">a bottomless sea.<\/em><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Clearly Paul is adding the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">a<\/em> to <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">byssos<\/em> to denoted the depth of the sea which he is speaking of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Paul <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">does<\/em> note &#8220;to bring Christ up from the dead,&#8221; here, but his point is the same as that of Deut 30:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>the word is near us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Old Testament text notes that God&#8217;s commands are not &#8220;up in Heaven&#8221; nor &#8220;beyond the sea&#8221; that one has to search for it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Paul is noting in Romans that we who follow the commands of Christ do not have to find Christ in either location, either. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">To that end, Romans 10 speaks of something other than the location known as &#8220;the Abyss.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He speaks either of the literal use of abyssos (the depthless) or of the figurative use of &#8220;the sea,&#8221; using the same compiled word for its secular meaning.<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000; line-height: 115%;\"><br style=\"page-break-before: always; mso-special-character: line-break;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;
