font-family: Cambria;\">The Purpose of The Law<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In order to come to terms with the role Law of Moses in the lives of New Testament believers, the New Testament itself must be the beginning of knowledge. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>We call ourselves &#8220;New Testament Christians&#8221; because of the very fact that the New Testament, or the New &#8220;covenant,&#8221; fulfilled much of what had been formerly introduced, prophesied or practiced and established itself as the next step in God&#8217;s progressive revelation to man.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>While some New Testament believers proclaim the necessity to continue to obey parts of the law, such claims &#8211; to a New Testament believer &#8211; should be established firmly in the doctrine of the New Testament itself, as the New Testament is a new chapter of understanding and spiritual insight.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>To obey the law on the grounds of the Old Testament, while ignoring New Testament teachings on the subject is not to be Christian at all, but to be Jewish.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">A primary step in that process it to understand what the New Testament teaches concerning the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">purpose<\/em> of the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Cambria;\">To reveal sin<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Probably the foundational principle of New Testament theology concerning the law is that the law had as a primary function the revealing of the shear sinfulness of man.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>While the previous chapter established the impossibility of New Testament believers to fully obey the law, it is also important to note the impossibility of obeying the law even before the advent of the New Testament.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even those who lived in the Old Testament, and under the law, were utterly incapable of obeying the law in all of its 613 commands, as Ecclesiastes notes,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Ecclesiastes 7:20 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>20 <\/sup>There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins. <\/span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Solomon recognized the truth which demanded the place for another covenant; that all are incapable of maintaining the righteous requirements of the law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>All have failed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">That is precisely the point.<\/em><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The law existed to demonstrate God&#8217;s righteousness and man&#8217;s sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is the law which demonstrated the very need for salvation through the vicarious substitutionary atonement of Christ.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For, as Paul put it,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Galatians 2:21 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>21 <\/sup>I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Thus, the very necessity of Christ&#8217;s atonement is based on the understanding that the law simply <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">could not <\/em>be upheld and that atonement in Christ <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">was necessary.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Isaiah 53:6 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>6 <\/sup>We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. <\/span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Indeed, if it were <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">possible<\/em> to attain salvation through the law, it would have been unnecessary for Christ to have perfectly fulfilled it and to have died as a final perfect sacrifice.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The purpose of the law was never to provide salvation (as will be demonstrated later in this work) but to reveal the sinfulness of man and thus <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">demonstrate<\/em> the necessity of salvation through another means: the atonement brought by the sacrifice of Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Romans 2:17-29 (NIV)<\/strong><strong><sup><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">17<\/span><\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God; <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">18<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">19<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">20<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth&#8211; <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">21<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">22<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">23<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">24<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0As it is written: &#8220;God&#8217;s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">25<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0Circumcision has value if you observe the law, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. <\/span><\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">26<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0If those who are not circumcised keep the law&#8217;s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">27<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">25<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0Circumcision has value if you observe the law, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. <\/span><\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">26<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0If those who are not circumcised keep the law&#8217;s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">27<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><\/em><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">28<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">29<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code<\/span>. Such a man&#8217;s praise is not from men, but from God. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">28<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">29<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code<\/span>. Such a man&#8217;s praise is not from men, but from God. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Verses 23-27 once again indicate that the law is a unit.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Verse 23 states <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u201cYou who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/em>This text points to several commandments, and also notes that those who brag about obeying these commandments are as guilty as others in breaking them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><strong><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">25<\/span><\/sup><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u00a0Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.<\/em><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The law is still demonstrated as a unit.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even those who break part of it have broken all of it, and are become as though they had not been circumcised, or as if they had not obeyed at all.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are utterly sinful, even in light of having gotten <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">some<\/em> of the law right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Continuing, verses 28-29 indicate that the law is intended to reveal something spiritual, not physical,<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><sup>28<\/sup>\u201cA man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical\u2026<sup>29<\/sup>circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Only in New Testament theology does one understand the role the law had in biblical history: to reveal the sinfulness of man and the need for a savior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Romans 3:19-26 (NIV)<strong><sup><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">19<\/span><\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">20<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: \"><em>Righteousness Through Faith<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">21<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0But <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known<\/span>, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">22<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">23<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">24<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">25<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished&#8211; <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">26<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Verse 20 eliminates any further misconception concerning the complete failure to keep the law by those who fail even on one part of it, <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u201cTherefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The law, then, was put into place to reveal sin \u2013 that we may become conscious of our transgression against God and realize the necessity of a permanent savior; one who could once and for all pay the atonement for sins past, present and future.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The text teaches that without the law, we would not have understood the nature of our separation from God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We would <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">not have known what sin is.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Romans 7:7<\/strong> <strong><sup><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">7<\/span><\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law.
