Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">16<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say &#8220;and to seeds,&#8221; meaning many people, but &#8220;and to your seed,&#8221; meaning one person, who is Christ. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">17<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">18<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise. <!--more--><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">19<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">20<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">19<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">20<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0A mediator, however, does not represent just one party; but God is one.<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">21<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">22<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">21<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">22<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">23<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">25<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Galatians 3 speaks a foundational truth concerning covenants agreed upon by two parties.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Namely, a third party is unable to come along and change the rules.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Verse 15 notes <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established.<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>To that end, verse 17 states, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">At this point, no rocket science has transpired, but merely the establishment that the covenant God made with Abraham, that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed (Gen. 22:18)<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">, has <em>not<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"> been annulled by the advent of the law, 430 years later.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The term &#8220;offspring&#8221; is the equivalent of the &#8220;seed&#8221; referred to in Galatians 3.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a preliminary promise, and remains intact in spite of the advent of the law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The covenant with Abraham, then, precedes the law historically and supersedes the law in its weight.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The law itself would for no reason change the terms of God&#8217;s promise to Abraham.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Verse 18 affirms this:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">18<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">The promise of the coming of Christ, Abraham&#8217;s promised seed which would bless the entire world, is independent of the advent of the law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This raises the logical question in verse 19, <\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">&#8220;What, then was the purpose of the law?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The answer to that question comes in two parts.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The first part identifies the reason, or the grounds for the purpose, while the second part states the actual purpose.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>While these two ideas are closely tied, the text seems to make such a distinction.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The purpose of a police officer is to maintain law and order.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">reason<\/em> a police officer is needed is because there is a <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">lack<\/em> of law and order when one is not present.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Verse 19 states the reason; the &#8220;because&#8221; of the coming of the law. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">&#8220;It was added because of transgressions until the seed to whom the promise referred had come.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">The law was needed, &#8220;because&#8221; it would serve as an answer to the problem of transgression.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The reason is separate from the purpose, yet closely linked.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This statement doesn&#8217;t exactly tell us what the purpose of the law was, but comes close, as it reveals the reason the law was needed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The actual purpose &#8211; or &#8220;how the law will fulfill the reason it was given&#8221; &#8211; is revealed beginning in verse 23.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, before the purpose of the law is fully revealed, Paul inserts a parenthetical argument, once again asserting the law as being <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">incapable<\/em> of imparting life, as the promise of Christ <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">would<\/em> do.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In short, he defines what the purpose of the law <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">is not.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Verse 21 states that<\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"> if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law, <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">affirming that the law has no part of salvation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It has <em>another purpose, <\/em>which unfolds next in the text. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Verse<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"> 22-23 inform the reader that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Scripture declares\u2026the whole world is a prisoner of sin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">, and that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The reason the law was given is do deal with the transgressions, yet it caused all to be held prisoner until the promise of faith (the seed &#8211; Christ) came!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The law revealed the sin of sinful man, causing sinful man to be held prisoner by the very law which he served.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">So, if the <em>reason<\/em> the law was given was to deal with transgression, yet the law itself caused people to be held prisoners because of said transgression, what on earth is the true <em>purpose<\/em> of the law?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The next sentence reveals the final piece of the puzzle.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Essence of a Tutor<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Verses 24-25 are the closing statement on the matter, which sums up the portrait Paul had been painting:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Galatians 3:24-25 (NIV) <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\"><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><sup>24 <\/sup>So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. <sup>25 <\/sup>Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. <\/span><\/em><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">As affirmed in the last section, one cannot accept the gift of salvation in Christ without a firm understanding of his fundamental sinfulness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>People cannot be saved from sin which they refuse to acknowledge.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;I am a sinner&#8221; is a requisite confession for anyone to be eligible for the substitutionary atonement of Christ. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The law, then, <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">because of transgression,<\/em> served its purpose to <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">lead us to Christ<\/em>, by demonstrating the utter need of everyone for redemption from the sin which the law itself was unable to quench.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Suddenly, the first purpose of the law (noted earlier) revealed in Romans 7:7, is illuminated; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">I would not have known what sin was except through the law.<br style=\"mso-special-character: line-break;\" \/><br style=\"mso-special-character: line-break;\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The law being &#8220;put in charge&#8221; is rendered from the Greek term <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">paidagogos;<\/em> an &#8220;instructor,&#8221; or a &#8220;tutor.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The KJV renders this phrase &#8220;the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The NASB translates &#8220;the law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Paul was one who chose his words carefully.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This phrase, sounding akin to a nun with a big stick in a parochial school, is used precisely within the context of that sentiment.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">A tutor, schoolmaster or guardian is one who is temporary by definition.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Children learn from a guardian or tutor so that the day will come when they can make their own decisions; built upon the teachings they have been instructed in, yet without the necessity of assistance from the tutor.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Guardianship has as its purpose the practical preparation of its student for self-governance.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>An examination of verses 24-25 indicate that this idea is in particular what Paul is teaching concerning the purpose of the law:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>it was to prepare us for the time of the coming of the promised blessing of Christ, when we would no longer live under the guardian&#8217;s rule of law, but instead, under the careful guidance of maturity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Verse 25 sums it up: <\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Combined, then, the two purposes of the law demonstrated so far were for the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">reason<\/em> of man&#8217;s sinfulness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sin must be understood to prepare oneself for the coming of the promise of Christ.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The purposes themselves were to demonstrate <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">what sin is, <\/em>thus being a tutor to teach man the principles of right living.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;
