color: #4f81bd; font-size: large;\">The Penal Substitution Theory<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/images\/horsesunsm.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"28\" height=\"40\" \/>While all atonement theories examined thus far have failed at producing a biblically-based portrayal of the doctrine of salvation, Anselm had at least gotten close with his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=625\" target=\"_blank\">Necessary-Satisfaction Theory<\/a>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Building upon some of those very principles, the Penal Substitution Theory, proposed by John Calvin (1509-1564), rightly aligned the missing theological puzzle pieces to present an accurate depiction of the work Christ completed on the cross.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Primarily, atonement theories are intended to illustrate <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">how<\/em> atonement was produced from Christ\u2019s death on the cross.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As such, a sound theory must not only make some valid assertions concerning the nature of Christ\u2019s work, but must illustrate the entire historical revelation of the atonement as defined in scripture.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Calvin\u2019s Penal Substitution Theory does that with great skill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">A proper understanding of the Penal Substitution Theory requires a holistic approach to God\u2019s revelation of atonement throughout scripture.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus did not merely show up on the playing field and create something new.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rather, he realized and fulfilled what God had already established; a <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">substitutionary<\/em> system of atonement.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As Jesus noted,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Matthew 5:17-18 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: black;\">17 <\/span><\/sup>&#8220;Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. <sup><span style=\"color: black;\">18 <\/span><\/sup>I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Clearly, Jesus himself understood his work to be complimentary to what had already been established.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>His work was to be that which would <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">fulfill<\/em> the law and the prophets rather something entirely new and unrelated.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>No system examined in this series thus far has expressed atonement in terms that related it as a fulfillment of the Law and the prophets.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=579\" target=\"_blank\">The Recapitulation Theory<\/a> disregards the Law almost entirely.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=579\" target=\"_blank\">The Ransom Theory<\/a> has God <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">paying off Satan<\/em>, which is dramatically opposed to the Old Testament Law in which God <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">himself<\/em> receives (or rejects) man\u2019s sin offering(s).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=607\" target=\"_blank\">The Moral Example Theory<\/a> completely disregards the punitive nature of the Law; attempting to implement a works oriented salvation which disregards the penalty of former sins.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=616\" target=\"_blank\">The Mystical Theory<\/a>, in addition to being just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=82\" target=\"_blank\">plain <\/a><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=82\" target=\"_blank\">weird<\/a>,<\/em> offers absolutely <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">no hint<\/em> of vicarious atonement as outlined in the Law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=625\" target=\"_blank\">Necessary-Satisfaction Theory<\/a>, while working off of good principles, still misappropriates certain legal aspects of atonement as depicted in the Law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A good atonement theory <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">must<\/em> adequately illustrate how God\u2019s program of redemption in the Law was systematically <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">fulfilled<\/em> and completed by the work of Christ!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Otherwise, Christ cannot be understood as having fulfilled the Law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Calvin\u2019s theory connected the proper dots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Details of Christ\u2019s fulfillment of the Law will be examined over the next several posts, yet at this point it should at least be noted that what Jesus \u201cfulfilled\u201d was a <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">substitutionary system of atonement<\/em>: the sacrificial system of the Old Testament Law. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Overall, the Penal Substitution Theory can be understood as a more comprehensive fleshing-out of Anselm\u2019s Satisfaction Theory.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Anselm had the basic idea, but missed key points which Calvin properly illuminated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"629_the-essence-of-the-p_1\" style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; color: #4f81bd; font-size: small;\">The Essence of the Penal Substitution Theory<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">The Satisfaction Theory rightly articulated that a debt was owed to God by mankind.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This debt required that satisfaction be attained by God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, it incorrectly defined man\u2019s offense as the defilement of God\u2019s honor.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>While surely God\u2019s honor became diminished in man\u2019s eyes because of sin, it is not God\u2019s honor which is in need of satisfaction according to the scriptures.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rather, it is God\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=574\" target=\"_blank\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">wrath for sin<\/em> <\/a>which is in need of satisfaction, as has already been illustrated.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus noted,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><strong><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">John 3:36 (NIV) <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><sup>36 <\/sup>Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God\u2019s wrath remains on him.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">And Paul exclaimed,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><strong><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Ephesians 2:3 (NIV) <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><sup>3 <\/sup>All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Understanding the problem of sin properly- that it invokes God\u2019s wrath- is key to understanding the nature of the satisfaction Jesus secured in the atonement.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was God\u2019s wrath over sin which was in need of satisfaction.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The atonement is oriented toward the securing of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">justice<\/em> rather than honor.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>God\u2019s law had been broken, invoking his wrath.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, being a just God, he demanded that payment be rendered for the broken Law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Such payment is not a mystery in the biblical narrative.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>God prescribed his punitive decision prior to the offense, clearly noting in the Garden of Eden that,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Genesis 2:17 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: black;\">17 <\/span><\/sup>\u2026 you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">With justice as a defining attribute of His nature, God cannot simply overlook <a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=564\" target=\"_blank\">one\u2019s sin<\/a>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sin is an offense to his Law; an illegal (penal) action requiring a just sentence, which God prescribed to be death to the offender.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What Jesus did on the cross was to quite literally apply the payment to God for the crimes of humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Romans 6:23 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: black;\">23 <\/span><\/sup>For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">God had always upheld the wages of sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They have never \u2013 nor will they ever change. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>And, God\u2019s sense of justice demands that wrongdoing be punished and that the offended party (himself) be compensated.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus\u2019 death on the cross accomplished both.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The sins of man were paid vicariously (more on that in coming posts) and God\u2019s justice was upheld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: black;\">21 <\/span><\/sup>God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The atonement was penal in nature, because it provided the means of payment for the breaking of God\u2019s Law which man had engaged.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was substitutionary in nature, because the payment was obtained vicariously by another: Christ. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Romans 3:22-26 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>22 <\/sup>This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, <sup>23 <\/sup>for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, <sup>24 <\/sup>and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. <sup>25 <\/sup>God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished&#8211; <sup>26 <\/sup>he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The substitutionary nature of Christ\u2019s death will be examined in more detail in the following weeks.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>One cannot truly understand how Jesus fulfilled the Law without first understanding the nature of the Law itself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Suffice it to say at this point, however, that the Law provided a means of restitution for man\u2019s sin through vicarious (substitutionary) means.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>God, in his graciousness, offered a system of atonement\u00a0by which an acceptable animal could be sacrificed on man\u2019s behalf, thus paying the required death sentence.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Such is the nature of the Law; as it details the processes and requirements of such penal substitutions to be made.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When Christ <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">fulfilled the Law<\/em>, he became the final perfect sacrifice for sin; rendering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.returningking.com\/?p=63\" target=\"_blank\">the Law utterly completed<\/a>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u201cnot the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">The Penal Substitution Theory of atonement rightly identifies the critical components of redemption by faith in Christ Jesus.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>God\u2019s wrath was invoked by man\u2019s sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>His justice demanded restitution.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In grace, he provided a substitutionary system of atonement, which Christ completed \u2013 once and for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in 6pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Isaiah 53:5-6 (NIV) <\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>5 <\/sup>\u2026 he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
