New from the Study Guide Series
Habakkuk & Jonah — Now in Group Bible Study Editions
New release · Group Bible Study Editions · Habakkuk (15 sessions) · Jonah (8 sessions)
Earlier this month, Habakkuk & Jonah joined the Study Guide Series — two Minor Prophets bound together and opened verse by verse. That volume was written for the study; these new editions are written for the table. Both prophets are now available as standalone Group Bible Study Editions, reshaped for a class, a small group, or a Sunday morning around the Word together.
Where the original volume reads straight through, the group editions break the material into weekly sessions with the group in mind — so a leader can open the book, work through a session, and put good questions in front of real people without spending hours converting content into teaching material from scratch. Two prophets, two studies, and between them the two hardest questions a believer ever brings to God.
Habakkuk — a 15-session study
Habakkuk begins where a lot of us secretly live: with a complaint. The prophet looks at evil going unpunished and asks God, plainly, how long? God’s answer only sharpens the tension — He is raising up a nation more brutal than the one He means to judge — and it drives Habakkuk to the line the whole book turns on: “the righteous shall live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:4, BSB), the seed the New Testament will harvest again and again. Across fifteen sessions, a group walks the prophet’s road from protest to worship — from “how long?” to “yet I will rejoice” — and learns, along the way, how prophecy itself speaks: a word to an ancient Judah that reaches forward to a final reckoning and the return of the King.
Jonah — an 8-session study
If Habakkuk struggles that God is too slow to judge, Jonah struggles that God is too quick to spare. Sent to preach to a cruel and hated enemy, the prophet runs — and the story that follows is not really about a fish. It is about a man who would rather die than watch God show mercy to people he thinks deserve wrath. Eight sessions carry a group through the flight, the deep, the reluctant sermon, the astonishing repentance of Nineveh, and the sharp, searching question God leaves hanging over Jonah’s anger — a question that turns out to be aimed at every one of us who has ever wanted justice for them and mercy for me.
Who these are for
Both editions are built for use, not just reading — small groups, Sunday school classes, midweek studies, and leaders who want a faithful, verse-by-verse path through the text with discussion ready to go.
The books are full color, with multi-colored boxes, intended to engage and encourage group conversations in dealing with the text.
Take one book or take both; run Jonah as a shorter eight-week study or settle into Habakkuk for a full quarter. And for anyone who wants the complete, unbroken exposition behind them, the original Habakkuk & Jonah volume is right there in the series.
