font-family: Calibri;\">The term<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Obviously, &#8220;The Pit&#8221; is rendered in English because two different Hebrew terms are used metaphorically to describe &#8220;the pit.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, both are clearly speaking of the same place, and both mean &#8220;the pit,&#8221; so they are grouped together in this section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 0pt 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Heb. <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Shachath<\/em>, means &#8220;destruction, the pit, or corruption.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 15pt 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Heb. <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bowr,<\/em> means &#8220;a pit or dungeon&#8221;<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Shachath (transliterated &#8220;shahat&#8221;) <\/em>and <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">bowr<\/em> appear more than twenty times in the Old Testament.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These are terms that can be used literally or metaphorically.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When they are used literally, they mean simply a pit; a hole in the ground.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When used metaphorically, they render the conclusions of this section.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Several times Job used <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">shachath<\/em> metaphorically and spoke of &#8220;the soul&#8221; going there to ensure proper understanding.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Job used <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">shachath<\/em>, however, both literally and metaphorically:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Job 9:30-31 (NIV) [a literal usage]<br \/>\n<sup>30 <\/sup>Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with washing soda, <sup>31 <\/sup>you would plunge me into a slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Job 33:22 (NIV) [a metaphorical usage]<br \/>\n<sup>22 <\/sup>His soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the messengers of death. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 4pt 0in 0pt;\"><a name=\"_Toc205266672\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc205200981\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: _Toc205266672;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;
