The Pit<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n

<\/a>The term<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Obviously, “The Pit” is rendered in English because two different Hebrew terms are used metaphorically to describe “the pit.”\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, both are clearly speaking of the same place, and both mean “the pit,” so they are grouped together in this section.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Heb. Shachath<\/em>, means “destruction, the pit, or corruption.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Heb. Bowr,<\/em> means “a pit or dungeon”<\/span><\/p>\n

Shachath (transliterated “shahat”) <\/em>and bowr<\/em> appear more than twenty times in the Old Testament.\u00a0 <\/span>These are terms that can be used literally or metaphorically.\u00a0 <\/span>When they are used literally, they mean simply a pit; a hole in the ground.\u00a0 <\/span>When used metaphorically, they render the conclusions of this section.\u00a0 <\/span>Several times Job used shachath<\/em> metaphorically and spoke of “the soul” going there to ensure proper understanding.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Job used shachath<\/em>, however, both literally and metaphorically:<\/span><\/p>\n

Job 9:30-31 (NIV) [a literal usage]
\n30 <\/sup>Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with washing soda, 31 <\/sup>you would plunge me into a slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

Job 33:22 (NIV) [a metaphorical usage]
\n22 <\/sup>His soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the messengers of death. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

Conclusion:<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n<\/p>\n

“The pit” has the same characteristics of Abaddon, though it is a common noun used metaphorically.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, “the pit” is a term for Abaddon which is not a proper name, but a general reference.\u00a0 <\/span>“The pit” and Abaddon are one and the same; the unrighteous side of Sheol.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
