font-family: Times New Roman;\">Origins<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;Hell&#8221; is an English word from the Saxon &#8220;helan,&#8221; which means &#8220;to cover&#8221; or &#8220;to hide&#8221;.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Being an English term, it is somewhat unique in this study, as there is no single underlying Hebrew or Greek term which can be traced biblically to coincide with the use of &#8220;Hell&#8221; in some translations.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Norse Goddess &#8220;Hel&#8221; was the goddess of the dead in mythology.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hell was adapted originally as a generalization for the place of the dead, and would have been a good term to use for the general translation of Sheol\/Hades for that reason.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Issue with Hell in translation<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The issue with the use of &#8220;Hell&#8221; today is that its English meaning has gradually transformed, indicating to most not a generalized &#8220;place of the dead,&#8221; but rather a localized &#8220;place of the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">unrighteous<\/em> dead.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When one speaks Hell today, the immediate thought produced is a picture of raging fire and punishment, which is inconsistent with many scriptural uses of Sheol\/Hades, which were places of both punishment and peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Issue with Hell in locality<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Even among today&#8217;s understanding of Hell being a place for the unrighteous there still remains an uncertainty in its usage:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>does it refer to the unrighteous side of Sheol\/Hades (which is temporary and not as severe as the Lake of Fire) or does it refer to the eternal Lake of Fire?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">A difficult term to use in many translational circumstances<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 15pt 1in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l1 level2 lfo1; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Because of these issues, Hell is not the best word to use in many places in scripture where some translations use it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is the author&#8217;s estimations that Hell&#8217;s common use today is geared toward the eternal lake of fire in its general use.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It could easily, therefore, lead to misinterpretations for biblical students who read it without understanding the underlying Hebrew or Greek terms being translated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 4pt 0in 0pt;\"><a name=\"_Toc205266696\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc205201005\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: _Toc205266696;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: large; font-family: Calibri;\">Examples of misleading interpretations using &#8220;Hell&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Many times, &#8220;Hell&#8221; is used to denote Sheol\/Hades, and other spiritual realms which is not a fully accurate understanding with today&#8217;s use of the term &#8220;Hell.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><span><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Psalms 16:10 (KJV) <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><sup>10 <\/sup>For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (Sheol) [NIV States &#8220;abandon me to the grave&#8221;]; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">This text is quoted by Peter in Acts 13 as a Messianic prophecy.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If &#8220;Hell&#8221; is the place of the punishment of the wicked, then Jesus could be understood to have gone there.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is one of the places where the Word of Faith teacher&#8217;s theology is formed; by a misinterpretation (the author believes it is intentionally so) of this text.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They then teach that Christ went to Hell to suffer for the sins of man.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Jonah 2:2 (KJV)<br \/>\n<sup>2 <\/sup>And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell (Sheol) cried I, and thou heardest my voice. <\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">This could lead one to believe that Jonah was at the doors of eternal punishment when he cried out to the Lord, which is not what is being depicted.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was at the doors of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Sheol<\/em>, to be certain, but this statement intends no inference about Jonah&#8217;s eternal position as being of the judgments of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Abbadon<\/em> or of Hell.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.5in;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Matthew 16:18 (KJV)<br \/>\n<sup>18 <\/sup>And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell (Hades) shall not prevail against it. <\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">This is a <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">highly<\/em> quoted verse, yet misunderstood by many.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>A proper understanding of &#8220;Hades&#8221; brings an entirely different exegesis to this text.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Some understand that &#8220;the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it&#8221; is a sign that Satan&#8217;s kingdom shall not prevail against the church.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>While this is a true sentiment, it is not what is being taught in this text.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 0pt 1.5in; text-indent: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Satan&#8217;s kingdom is not synonymous with Hell &#8211; be that Abbadon or the Lake of Fire.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hell- by any common definition- is GOD&#8217;S place of judgment.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some think of Hell as Satan&#8217;s front office, however this approach completely miscomprehends scripture.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hell is God&#8217;s place of judgment, not Satan&#8217;s.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is in fact a place of judgment which God created &#8220;for Satan and his angels&#8221; to be punished in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 2in; text-indent: -0.25in; line-height: normal; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo2; mso-add-space: auto;\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font: 7pt \">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: windowtext; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Matthew 25:41 (NIV) <\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: windowtext; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><sup><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\">41 <\/span><\/sup><\/em><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: windowtext; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\">&#8220;Then he will say to those on his left, &#8216;Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: windowtext; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"> <\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0in 15pt 1.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The text states that the &#8220;gates of Hades&#8221; shall not prevail against the church.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This yields an entirely different exegesis.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hades is the place of the dead.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, the gates to &#8220;place of the dead&#8221; line-height: 150%;\"><em>Revelation 1:18 (NIV)<br \/>\n18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever!
