The Judgments of Believers<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n

The first question one would ask when discussing the “judgment” of saints is, “for what?”\u00a0 <\/span>Clearly scripture teaches that believers are not judged for their sin<\/span>[1]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>Christ alone received the judgment for sin on the cross.\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, scripture teaches that believers will undergo judgment.\u00a0 <\/span>The purpose of judgment for believers will be demonstrated in this section to be a judgment for reward rather than a judgment for punishment. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Judgment Seat of Christ<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/h3>\n

The Judgment Seat of Christ is the judgment for the church.\u00a0 <\/span>It does not include the Old Testament Saints nor the Tribulation Saints.<\/span><\/p>\n

The texts:<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n

Romans 14:10-12 (NIV)
\n10 <\/sup>You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 <\/sup>It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.'” 12 <\/sup>So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

1 Corinthians 3:11-15 (NIV)
\n11 <\/sup>For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 <\/sup>If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 <\/sup>his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. The results of this judgment<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

The timing of this judgment<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

Note:\u00a0 <\/span>The coming of Christ can be derived to mean his coming to rule (the “second coming”) or his coming to rapture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of the events of the Great Tribulation, Luke warns:<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 21:35-36 (NIV)
\n35 <\/sup>For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 <\/sup>Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.” <\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n

In this text, the results of the rapture are that “you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”<\/span><\/p>\n

More clearly, Luke 14<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 14:12-14 (NIV)
\n12 <\/sup>Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 <\/sup>But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 <\/sup>and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n

Clearly, the “repayment,” or “reward” for this act of righteousness is paid “at the resurrection of the righteous.”\u00a0 <\/span>This resurrection, then, for these followers of Jesus who would become “the church”, is when Jesus “comes” for the rapture, and the church is resurrected.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rewards<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n
Authority <\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n

Matthew 5:19 (NIV)
\n19 <\/sup>Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

Mark 10:35-40 (NIV)
\n35 <\/sup>Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 <\/sup>“What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 37 <\/sup>They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 <\/sup>“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” 39 <\/sup>“We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 <\/sup>but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. \n19 <\/sup>For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

1 Corinthians 9:25 (NIV) [for self discipline?]
\n25 <\/sup>Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV) [for enduring?]
\n7 <\/sup>I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 <\/sup>Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

James 1:12 (NIV) [for suffering?]
\n12 <\/sup>Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

Revelation 2:10 (NIV) [same as in James above – for suffering, or for martyrdom?]
\n10 <\/sup>Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

Of the judgments of the Old Testament saints and tribulation saints, not much is said in scripture other than the references to the facts that they have judgments.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Judgment of the Old Testament Saints<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Daniel 12:13 (NIV)

The Judgment of the Tribulation Saints<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Revelation 20:4-6 (NIV)
\n4 <\/sup>I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 <\/sup>(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6 <\/sup>Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n
The Timing:<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

V4 begins “I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This indicates that the judging of these tribulational saints is the context of that which follows, and that their judgment occurs, once again, in conjunction with their resurrections.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The Substance:<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

V6 states “they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.”<\/span><\/p>\n

While the text does not clearly indicate the results of this judgment, it infers it via two categories of service, each of which are hierarchical in nature:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Priests:\u00a0 <\/span>the priesthood in the Old Testament is a hierarchical structure through and through.\u00a0 <\/span>This indicates that the judgment would likely decide their positions within that structure.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Reign with him:\u00a0 <\/span>It appears the tribulation saints will participate in both the priestly and kingly functions of Messiah’s reign.\u00a0 <\/span>Governing, too, is a hierarchical structure.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, it also appears that the judgment may determine their position within the government of the kingdom.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
