{"id":45,"date":"2008-08-23T07:51:31","date_gmt":"2008-08-23T07:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/returningking.com\/?p=45"},"modified":"2008-08-23T07:51:31","modified_gmt":"2008-08-23T07:51:31","slug":"introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/returningking.com\/?p=45","title":{"rendered":"Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 1 of 8 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/returningking.com\/?series=law-and-believer\" class=\"series-215\" title=\"The Law and The Believer\">The Law and The Believer<\/a><\/div><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">(This series will be updated roughly semi-weekly until complete)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">In churches across the world nuances of resistance are beginning to emerge from pulpits, Sunday School classrooms and private conversations at the church water fountain.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The subject of this movement seems always tied to someone&#8217;s reluctant (and less than systematic) foray into the world of the Old Testament.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <!--more--><\/span>After all, we are a unified church of Jesus Christ: <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">New Testament<\/em> Christians.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The simple truth is that most know little of the Old Testament, as most are content to remain on the shallow end of the theological pool where it is both safe and easy to navigate.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sure, a good student will certainly have perused Psalms and Proverbs.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They may possibly even have a well-rounded story board of the patriarchs in immediate recall.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, when it comes to the Old Testament Law; those numerous commandments of Moses, there has been a long-standing policy which has until recently been unchallenged by<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>the masses:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">that part of the Bible was for the Jews- not us.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">To establish the foundation of this work from the start, I must cautiously state, &#8220;I agree,&#8221; to a specific extent.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Law was given with a unique purpose for a defining phase of God&#8217;s progressive revelation of himself to the world. And, to make short work of it, Jesus himself stated that he had fulfilled the law:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt 0.5in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Matthew 5:17 (NIV) <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><sup>17 <\/sup>&#8220;Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. <\/span><\/em><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Clearly, Jesus draws a distinction between two ideas:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>that of abolishment and fulfillment.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;Abolishment&#8221; renders something as absent; eliminated.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 &#8220;<\/span>Fulfillment,&#8221; however, renders something as &#8220;done,&#8221; with no need to be revisited for another crack at it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">It is true that Jesus did not abolish the law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is what he said.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The law remains as a testimony to God&#8217;s character and man&#8217;s utter inability to live up to his expectations.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The New Testament gives a thorough explanation of the purposes the Law served in God&#8217;s progressive testimony of himself, which will be studied in this work.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, it also unequivocally pronounces that work fulfilled and utterly &#8220;done.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">However, for many, there remains confusion over the newly discovered &#8220;material&#8221; stumbled upon during their &#8220;Bible in a year&#8221; program.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Law is there, and it is the Bible, so aren&#8217;t we supposed to do what the Bible says?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 12pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">That certainly seems to be a revived theme among some authors and preachers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Books rise up commonly on topics related to the reinstitution of portions of the Law of Moses.
