Issue with Hell in translation o The issue with the use of “Hell” today is that its English meaning has gradually transformed, indicating to most not a generalized “place of the dead,” but rather a localized “place of the unrighteous dead.” When one speaks Hell today, the immediate thought produced is a picture of raging fire and punishment, which is inconsistent with many scriptural uses of Sheol/Hades, which were places of both punishment and peace.
o Abaddon is the destruction of the soul only, while Gehenna is the destruction of body and soul o Gehenna is the final abode of the souls of the unrighteous o Being permanent, Gehenna must be the final destination of the souls of the wicked o It therefore must proceed the state of Abaddon, which is temporary To this end, “Hell” is a good modern translation for Gehenna, as Hell is understood in modern terms as a permanent place of destruction, burning and separation from God.
Deductions Tartarus is a place where sinful angels (Demons) are confined Tartarus is a place of unique bondage: o In dungeons (or chains) o Being held for judgment Tartarus, while temporary, is more permanent than the Abyss.
Deductions The Great River Euphrates is a reference point for a place of angelic bondage To that end, it must be understood that the bondage associated with the Great River Euphrates is a bondage of demonic angels, as righteous angels are never noted in scripture to be bound.
Enoch then details the following: o The son of Lamech (Noah) is told that a flood will consume and destroy the earth because of the acts of the demons o The demons are cast into a place of darkness until the final judgment, at which time they will be cast into eternal fire RELATED POST Deductions Demonic angels who committed a specific act of disobedience are cast into this place This place is a place of confinement until the last judgment, where these demons are held “for judgment on the great Day.” o This place is referenced as a punishment in accordance with a quote from Enoch, which details a specific act of angelic disobedience: the procreation between human women and demons This place includes bondage with chains: “bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.” Conclusions This place is one and the same as Tartarus of 2 Peter 2:4 o It is a place of confinement for the whole of history, until the final judgment o Those confined there are angelic in nature o This confinement is due to a particularly evil act o This confinement includes being bound within, by chains or locked room (dungeon)

It is later clear from the text that Paul speaks of himself as the man who went into “Paradise,” which he also calls tritos ouranos, “the third heaven.” Paul clearly helps us establish several things in this text: That the third heaven is “Heaven proper” That the third heaven is the same as Paradise That it exists per his personal testimony Revelation 4:1-2 (NIV) 1 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven.
This is the most ambiguous of the texts, but the other two indicate clearly that discipline is not the purpose of the judgment The timing of this judgment The timing of this judgment is when Jesus “comes” o 1 Corinthians 4:5 (NIV) 5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;
The Resurrections For Believers: (The First Resurrection) The resurrection of the dead is a global occurrence, for believers and non-believers alike. The Church’s Order in the First Resurrection The dead in Christ 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first The “dead in Christ” refer to those have died in the church and are buried (or otherwise remain) on earth in the body The living in Christ 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
Deductions from these texts clearly indicate: Some parts of Hell are worse than others The judgment of the lost will determine their punishment One’s knowledge of right and wrong will determine their punishment The judgment of the Great White Throne, being the judgment of all of the world’s historical lost, then, is the judgment which determines the degree of one’s punishment in Hell.
