Gog/Magog War (who is attacked)

This entry is part 3 of 6 in the series Gog/Magog War
Who Is Attacked?

It’s clear that Israel is being attacked, but specifically, it should be noted that it is modern Israel which is being attacked, as opposed to the former Israel destroyed in the first century, as only modern Israel fits the description of the text.

Ezekiel 38:7-9 (NIV)7 “‘Get ready; be prepared, you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. 8 After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety. 9 You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land.

Verses 8 and 9 specify the mountains of Israel are the location of this attack and that this is a massive attack “covering the land.”

Verse 8 also informs the student that this is modern Israel, rather than the former nation of Israel, because it’s a land “that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate.”  These statements are not true of Israel in any time prior to current history.  They have reunited as a nation, from many peoples, and have been rebuilding the communities in the mountains that had long been desolate from their former national existence.  While parts of Israel have been desolate throughout history, only today are those places of long desolation fully rebuilt and flourishing with life again.  And, only today can it be accurately said that the rebuilding of those desolate places coincides with the people having been “gathered from many nations” with the convergence of the Jewish nation to the land of Israel prior to and since Israel’s rebirth as a nation in 1948.
